How To Manage Your Checking Account

There will come a time in everybody's life, when they will need to open a checking account. An account designed for kids and teenagers may be super cool when you are at school – but as you progress up the ladder of your chosen career, you will need a bank account which gives you access to more facilities and services. Many banks will offer you checking account promotions to encourage you to open a checking account with them.

A checking account is different from a savings account, in that the bank will base all its decisions on whether to grant you credit or not; on how you conduct your checking account. Be sure that when you decide to make the change that you are ready to commit to making sound financial decisions and to be responsible in the way that you conduct your transactions and stick to agreed dates for any repayments of loans or overdrafts. Every time you make a late payment or apply for credit which you do not qualify for; this is recorded and will count against you in the long run.

My advice would be not to spend the money that you receive as part of any checking account promotions; but to rather keep it in your account as a buffer for a rainy day when you may be short on making a payment. This is referred to as a “slush fund” and the bigger your slush fund is, the more secure you will be and thus the better credit profile you will have. There are so many things on which we waste our money, which are actually so unhealthy and bad for us. If I could give you further advice, it would be to sacrifice all these unnecessary things for a few months and deposit the extra money that you have into your checking account in a lump sum. When you apply for a loan, the bank manager will see that you have the capacity and discipline to repay a loan or even a bond on a property.

By changing the way that you view your money and the way that you use and spend your money, within a few months from the first day you saved your bonus from any of the many checking account promotions, (or savings account bonus if you find a great savings account promotion) – you may be the proud owner of the car of your dreams or even your own home. This is a great opportunity, please do not waste it.
